It was late in the day, the hallway was damp and the evening light was streaming in through the windows. Lockers were closing slowly, like tired mouths. On the corkboard, the posters were crooked, and the cell phone burned with silent notifications as you walked by.
One day you wake up and you already have a word stuck to you: “stalker”. But no weird messages, no approaches, no nothing… just the rumor running through the school. You want to tell your version, but no one asks for it: “we’d better keep our distance”. The groups keep changing and you stay outside; there’s always a spare chair – yours – even though no one else is missing. You walk as if you carry the shame of something you never did and the coldness of not fitting in. And everything stays the same for weeks: your stomach clenching and your head spinning. It wasn’t a fight, it was as if you had already been judged without giving you a chance.
– “I want to explain my part.”
– “No need, for safety’s sake.”
– “Preventing is not condemning. Listening also protects.”
I am your partner and today I decide not to look at the ground.
1. Right now: I stand next to you and say clearly: “We don’t accuse without evidence. If there’s a problem, the three of us go to the tutor”.
2. In 10 seconds: I cut the buzz in the group: “No more labels. If there is no evidence, don’t resend”.
3. In class: I ask the teacher for a minute to propose symmetrical non-contact while everything is being clarified.
4. After recess: I offer to be your support partner this week and accompany you to record in writing your version with dates.
5. If I am attacked for intervening: I look for two allies and we raise it together to the tutor/CPE.
6. This week: we promote a classroom agreement against rumors and we sign up for active witness training.
7. When it becomes clear: I ask (without exposing anyone) that it be communicated in class that there was no bullying and that the labeling stop.
Roles at the table: person accused, person accusing, peer witness (narrator), tutor/teacher, mediator/CPE, class delegate, allies, class group.
