It was the change of classes at the high school. Lockers opened and closed like accordions, and in the middle of the hallway, I watched a circle of backpacks close too tightly around a classmate. Years later, far from home, the classroom smelled of machine coffee and, every time I spoke, my accent became the center of stares and jokes.
At first I was a witness: I saw how a classmate was surrounded by jokes that were no longer jokes. I took her out of the ring and escorted her straight to the tutoring room. But then it was my turn, in another country: they laughed at my clothes, at the way I spoke, at the way I was. I sought help from the teachers, but they told me: “It’s just a joke”. I waited, I held on… but it didn’t stop. I blurted out everything I felt: I told my parents and also the management. They investigated: some teachers who looked the other way were expelled, among those who made fun, one was expelled and another was reprimanded. From that moment on, when I see someone shaking, I reach out to them, because I know what it is like to be alone in the face of bullying.
– “We’re just playing.”
– “If someone suffers, it’s not play.”
– “Don’t think about it.”
– “It does happen: it’s happening to me.”
I am your partner and today I act.
1. Now (10 s): I stand next to you: “Stop imitating his accent/clothes. Give him space”.
2. Safe exit: I accompany you to headquarters and record with time/place what I saw.
3. I cut the rumor: in the group, “don’t forward, delete”; if they insist, I recruit two allies and we upload the report together.
4. Sustained support (1 week): I offer myself as a support partner during breaks/class and review with you what you need.
5. Class change: I ask the tutor for a minute to set rules against imitations and jokes about origin/style.
6. If an adult minimizes: I ask for another reference person and cite school protocol.
7. Celebrate diversity: I propose a voluntary map of accents/stories and a visible reminder of the anti-hate channel.
Roles at the table: narrator (allied witness), affected student, mimic leader, chorus of laughter, minimizing teacher, tutor/head teacher, families, allied partner.
