Shining is not a crime

Setting

End of term. The hallway smells of marker and photocopies; on the bulletin board, many starred notes. She walks noiselessly, looking frail, but inside she is strong and steady. Her good work and accomplishments make others take notice… and some people resent it.

Situation

A group of girls starts to pick on her just because she is doing well: they whisper things, roll their eyes, leave her out of group work and get-togethers, make jokes that belittle her accomplishments: “ball”, “nerd”, “no big deal”, “the perfect one is here”.
She doesn’t brag: she studies, helps, breathes and moves on. But the daily drip of teasing and comparisons wears away her joy.

Key dialogue

– “T’s again? What a drag.”
– “I work hard. I don’t compete with anyone.”
– “Then get off the pedestal.”
– “I didn’t get on it. I’m just doing my part.”

Rewrite the story

If I’m your partner and I don’t stand by and watch today, I do this:

Now (10 s): I plant myself next to him and say clearly, “Enough with the comparisons and teasing. Give her space.”
Bridge: I invite her to my work group and propose in class that the teams rotate, so she can’t be left out.
In class: I ask the teacher for a minute to agree on simple rules: celebrate everyone’s achievements, prohibit nicknames and put-downs, and use a “cutting word” to stop ugly jokes.
In chat: I write “delete messages and don’t forward jokes”; if they continue, I report it and another witness to the tutor.
Week 1: I propose a challenge wall where everyone can upload progress or achievements. I also propose that there be support pairs, in case someone feels isolated. If the bullying continues, we ask for a brief mediation and clear agreements.
This way everyone understands that standing out is not a reason to be excluded or demeaned. Celebrating each other’s efforts, caring and being an active witness changes the environment and helps no one feel alone or exhausted because of envy or teasing.

Roles at the table: standout student, bully leader, follower, peer witness (narrator), tutor, guidance, class group.
